amid a crowd of stars

… and trying to stay awake

Manafon- David Sylvian

without comments

I’m a fan. I admit it. I’ve been listening to David Sylvian for about 20 years, starting with his Secrets of the Beehive, which to my mind (and ears) is a recording that rises above the temporal and manages to occupy a space aboveĀ  that of the passing fad or trend. I guess I appreciate that… chasing after the eternal verities as opposed to making a quick buck.

Sylvian’s latest offering reinforces this. Manafon is not easy. It is a recording that, like some of Coltrane’s later works, demands attention. This is not background music, but it is music that rewards your listening.

The title comes from the work of the poet R.S. Thomas… who isn’t an easy poet in his own right.
